The
Monday Milkmen are a band with musical influences ranging from funk to jazz
to classical and everything in-between. Made up of some of the top players from
Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan, they have played around the world (either
as a band or individually) with such a diverse list of world renown artists
as; Andrea Boccelli, Della Reese, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, Chester
Thompson, James Carter, Marcus Belgrave, Alberta Adams, Dub Culture, King Sundiata
(formerly of The Wailers, and percussionist with Carlos Santana), and many others.
Philip Whitfield, who is the chief songwriter/arranger; as well as Keyboardist,
Guitarist, and Lead Vocals; Senegalese bassist, Issa Sall, and Djallo Djakate
Keita on Drums, form the core of the group. They are often augmented by the
“Bag O’ Milk Hornz” (Stefan Seslija on Trumpet, Len Temelini
on Tenor Sax, and Jackson Drobko on Trombone), renown artist and poet, Ibn Pori
Pitts, will sometimes join in with some spoken word, as well as DJ Blackman
(of Kid Rock fame) who will help take things to a different place. Much like
the Grateful Dead, each show is slightly different from the last but always
entertaining and full of funky energy.
The music is heavily influenced by Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Frank Zappa (although they have been known to play everything from Britney Spears to Black Sabbath to Stravinsky). Many times songs will be wholly improvised finding is genesis with Philip’s immortal question: “What you got?”, thus beginning the musical sojourn that takes everyone on a little trip and sets toes to tappin’. Other times they will weave their way through Philip’s intricate arrangements and original tunes. The beauty of The Monday Milkmen is their ability to allow enough space for each member to stretch out and to do their thing, while maintaining a funky groove. A religious dedication to experimentation, as well as their need to have a good time all the time, is what keeps people transfixed. Playing music that can excite an audience and has a high level of musicianship has always been the aim of The Monday Milkmen. Their credo of; “Ev’rything I play gonna be funky!” has helped them build a steadily growing fan base in both Canada and the US. With their first CD, The Duct Tape Sessions having made the number nineteen slot on the Earshot charts in 2002, their second CD Does This Milk Smell Funny To You? and third Plan C, getting airplay in Windsor, London and Toronto, as well as the US, Mexico, and Europe, The Monday Milkmen are fast gaining a reputation as a band to keep an eye on.
